Florida Good Life's Rebel Farm
Rebelling against the status quo in how food is grown.
OUR STORY
Family-Owned Business
I am a first-generation Cuban-American. My father grew up on the family farm in Cuba and brought his passion for agriculture with him when he settled in Miami. Growing up, I was surrounded by citrus grafting experiments, compost piles, banana circles, and papaya trees. My mother loved her flowers and planted roses. When someone had respiratory congestion, she'd send me out to the front-yard garden to pick Tilo for a medicinal steam bath and tea.
Growing up, our garden was functional. It was fun. I ran around with my brother chasing lizards and searching for snakes. We learned how to identify plants and how to sense when rain was coming. We'd pick sour oranges to marinate meat and yuca root.
When I was 12, we had to move. I cried for days because I loved our tiny, curious yard. My parents were entering the middle class and wanted to fit in. The yard became about looking like our neighbors; all aesthetics, no function. I quickly became an inside child and lost myself in books instead of nature.
After 20 years of working as an academic and educator, I felt out of touch. I quit my job and moved back to Florida with my husband and dogs. We settled in Tampa and I quickly started gardening for function, Florida style. The garden became my refuge, grocery store with foods I can't find anywhere, and a vibrant wildlife sanctuary. Rabbits and birds moved in, butterflies flittered about, snakes and ladybugs were tucked in different corners, and all our rodent problems disappeared. It took some time, but our tiny lot became our paradise and where I regained my health after corporate burn-out.
I was inpsired to start my business to help others feel and eat better.
